04.04.11, fighting the WOW from Madison to Mongolia

On April 4, Teamsters along with hundreds of thousands of working people will come together for a day of action around the world. It's a day for getting educated and involved about the corporate-backed War on Workers.  More than 900 events are currently planned in all 50 states as well as in Paris, Mongolia and Afghanistan. They range from teach-ins, worksite mobilizations, rallies and community forums. Events will take place over the weekend and peak on Monday.

In Raleigh, N.C., people will gather for a 15 minute silent vigil to symbolize the silencing of working people’s voices. In Syracuse, N.Y., people will stand at 40 intersections to talk to people in their cars about what’s happening.

On Saturday, more than a thousand Teamsters with Joint Council 28 will travel to the border for an international solidarity event with union brothers and sisters in Canada. More than 4,000 people are expected, with speakers from Washington, Wisconsin and Canada, as well as two bands.

On Monday, Teamsters in Atlanta will march with Martin Luther King. III, at 5:30 P.M from the King Center to the Capitol. They will remind elected officials that workers' rights are human rights and that those rights will not be destroyed.

Also on Monday, Ohio Teamsters, including Teamsters Local 507 members, will march together down E. 105th St. in Cleveland to the Greater Abyssinian Baptist Church for a solidarity event. There will be a rally earlier in the day in downtown Cleveland as well.

More events will be held nationwide and are being listed by Teamsters across the country on the “4.4.11 Day of Action” Facebook page. Check out the group and post your photos, videos and comments on the page in advance of April 4th and as your events are happening.

April 4 was chosen as the day of action because it marks the 43rd anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who was killed while defending Memphis sanitation workers’ rights to bargain collectively. Teamsters fought side-by-side with King in the movement for civil and workers' rights.

April 4 is really about what individuals can do together--no matter how large or small--to make an impact . This can be as simple as making a promise to help maintain the middle class by going to the Teamsters April 4th site where Teamsters can:
Watch and share a poignant video on Dr. King and the Teamsters, which highlights how the struggle for workers’ rights still continues;
Download informational fliers to share with four people;
Commit to talk to four union and nonunion workers about the importance of unions; and
Sign up for Teamster e-alerts to find out about anti-worker legislation.
