Turning the tide on voter suppression
Voting rights is a key issue of our time, challenging democracy and the ability of the American people to participate in the electoral process as guaranteed under U.S. law.
Many states in recent years have approved rules that tamp down on the ability of particularly minority voters to make it to the polls. An ongoing federal lawsuit challenging restrictive voter suppression rules approved by North Carolina lawmakers in 2013 stands as one of the leading examples of how legislatures across the country have tried to tip the scales toward a more corporate-friendly landscape.
As part of North Carolina NAACP v. McCrory, plaintiffs are rightfully questioning the trimming or eliminating measures that had been adopted over the previous 15 years in an effort to help boost electoral participation by minority and younger voters in North Carolina.
It appears even some of the proponents of those changes have had a change of heart in regards to the provisions they enacted two years ago. Gov. Pat McCrory (R.), for instance, recently signed into law changes that lessened the identification requirements to vote.
Efforts to defeat voter suppression or even make state laws less restrictive are actually on the rise, according to a panel that discussed the issue at the Netroots Nation conference in Phoenix last week. In fact, DeNora Getachew, campaign manager and legislative counsel for the Brennan Center's Democracy Program, said four times as many bills to expand voter rights were introduced in 2014 than to restrict them.
The Teamsters have been active for years in registering union members to vote. That is the way this country makes sure the voices of all Americans are heard. Oregon is doing that. North Carolina isn't. Others need to follow the more inclusive model.

The trends we have seen ... is that the trend is actually in favor of increasing access to voting.Participants from Nevada, Oregon and New Mexico discussed how building coalitions were essential to their efforts either to defeat stricter voting rules or to get measures passed that made it easier for state residents to cast a ballot. And in some instances, the results were truly monumental. In Oregon, for instance, the state earlier this year approved automatic voter registration.
The Teamsters have been active for years in registering union members to vote. That is the way this country makes sure the voices of all Americans are heard. Oregon is doing that. North Carolina isn't. Others need to follow the more inclusive model.

Teamster state representative leads rally against fast track in Oregon
![]() |
| State Rep. (and 10-year Teamster) Rob Nosse. |
Brother Nosse is a labor representative with the Oregon Nurses Association and a member of Teamster Local 223.
Oregon is a key battleground in the fight to stop fast track because of one man: U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden. Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, hasn't said whether he supports a fast-track bill that Republican leaders say they'll file in April.
The rally was organized to pressure Wyden to oppose fast track. The Oregonian reported:
Top Republicans are negotiating with Wyden, ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, over the terms of the bill in the hopes he can bring enough Democratic support to win congressional passage.
"We need to call Sen. Wyden and tell him, 'Vote no.' Fast track is not a way to do trade deals," said Morgan Gratz-Weiser of the Oregon Sierra Club, at a rally held in Director Park in downtown Portland...
"We got NAFTA, we got CAFTA and the way I see it, workers got the 'shaft-a,'" said Oregon AFL-CIO President Tom Chamberlain, referring to the North American and Central American trade pacts that were among several that have been staunchly opposed by organized labor. If we beat fast track, we beat the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and other job-killing trade deals.

Mega-rich take aim at the states for 2014
![]() |
| Not just Ohio... |
The Kochs and their friends have bags of money, they are ruthless and they lie.
This is how well-funded they are: Last year alone they spent $400 million on politics, as much as the entire labor movement, reported the Washington Post today:
The political network spearheaded by conservative billionaires Charles and David Koch has expanded into a far-reaching operation of unrivaled complexity, built around a maze of groups that cloaks its donors, according to an analysis of new tax returns and other documents.
The filings show that the network of politically active nonprofit groups backed by the Kochs and fellow donors in the 2012 elections financially outpaced other independent groups on the right and, on its own, matched the long-established national coalition of labor unions that serves as one of the biggest sources of support for Democrats. The Post, as usual, makes the mistake of claiming the Kochs are against 'government overreach.' They aren't. They're quite happy with government overreach if they think it helps them.
Right-to-work-for-less laws force unions to represent workers who refuse to pay the cost of that representation. If that isn't government overreach, we don't know what is.
Now that the new year is here, lawmakers are returning to state capitals and the Koch stooges among them are repeating the Kochs' lies. In Missouri, House Speaker Tim Jones repeated the tired old lie that right-to-work-for-less will make the state competitive with its neighbors. (Though you could argue that's true if 'competitive' means 'competitive in a race to the bottom.')
In Missouri, Ohio and Oregon, the Kochs' patsies want to put right-to-work-for-less on the ballot. They're up to no good in other states as well. In Florida, for example, the Sun-Sentinel is warning against their machinations:
2014 is a make-it-or-break-it year for the Kochs, JMI, FGA, ALEC and whatever new, cozy-sounding names and acronyms they concoct to hide the fact that they're out to take over the country. Somewhere, some Koch-financed group is plotting — and laughing at how easy it is to get most Americans to vote against their own self-interest. With tragic consequences, some people who've made a few bucks regurgitate the garbage of the mega-rich, fantasizing they are one of them and that they're accepted members of the club.A terrific editorial in the Salem, Ore., Statesman-Journal, describes how the Kochs took aim at Oregon:
Our sense is that it is almost as if a big red X has been affixed to a map of our state by outside influences who have decided in secret that we are to be the next target in their misinformation campaign. Chief among the groups is the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), an unchecked conservative policy organization bent on convincing more states to enact right-to-work laws, using whatever-it-takes tactics.
In the months to come, you should expect to hear bloated claims about the positive effects that right-to-work laws have had on state economies. The sad truth is that workers actually reap fewer gains when right-to-work laws are enacted and new businesses are lured to states. The big gains are raked in by the very corporations supporting the greedy goals that ALEC members pledge to support. We couldn't agree more with their conclusion:
The misinformation campaign is coming, but it does not have to succeed.
Right-to-work proponents are expecting you to roll over and play dumb.
We suggest you sit up and become informed. To sit up and become informed -- and to find out what you can do to help fight the battle over right-to-work-for-less -- check in with these Facebook pages: Oregon AFL-CIO, We Are Ohio and Stop Right To Work (for less) in Missouri.

Oregon guv says he'll fight RTW4Less for government workers
Oregon's governor John Kitzhaber slammed a proposed ballot measure that would impose right-to-work-for-less on government workers during a Labor Day picnic.
Backers of the ballot measure want to crush Oregon unions. They say they don't but they're lying.
Jeff Mapes at The Oregonian reported:
Kitzhaber, speaking at a Labor Day picnic at Oaks Park sponsored by the Northwest Labor Council, denounced the initiative as an attempt to turn Oregon into a "so-called right-to-work state" that would weaken unions and leave workers less well-off...
"A right-to-work state means you have a right to work for less without a voice in the workplace," Kitzhaber told the labor crowd. "A right-to-work state means you have a right to be exploited and ripped off and work at unsafe jobs and low wages and no benefits."
The governor charged that anti-union forces are targeting Oregon "because this is where labor is strongest." He cited organized labor's role in passing the nation's second highest minimum wage law and noted that Oregon's largest union -- Service Employees International Union -- has been able to reverse the general trend in declining union membership by organizing home health care workers...
...unions have already been girding for another fight over an initiative they believe is aimed at weakening the public employee unions, which are key backers of Democratic candidates in Oregon...
He said right-to-work laws strike at the heart of unions that he said play a crucial role in building the middle class. "Without organized labor, we have very little chance to address the growth of income disparity," he said.

Teamsters tell Ore. lawmakers: TPP is 'a big, bad secret'
![]() |
| Brother Mark McPherson, testifying today in Oregon against the TPP. |
Mark McPherson, an organizer with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters' Joint Council 37, is speaking before the House Committee on Agriculture and National Resources today. Brother McPherson is telling lawmakers that TPP will be worse for U.S. workers than the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) approved 20 years ago.
McPherson is sounding the alarm on several fronts. He explains how the TPP is being negotiated behind closed doors. He talks about how it will destroy workers' rights. Most of his comments focus on how it will adversely affect the dairy industry in North America, including the 600 workers employed at eight different dairy facilities in Oregon:
...the pending TPP trade agreement will have tremendous impact on where and how dairy products are produced and processed both here in Oregon, and throughout the United States. We are concerned about sanitary standards and market access – in short, concerned that the agreement will be unhealthy and will kill U.S. jobs in the dairy industry. Many of us may not know much about New Zealand, which is one of the twelve countries in negotiations, but it is my understanding that New Zealand is to milk what Saudi Arabia is to oil. New Zealand has a monopolistic dairy sector wherein essentially one company, Fonterra, has evolved only several degrees from a state-owned entity. New U.S. market access for New Zealand would be especially damaging not only to Teamsters, but to Oregon dairy farmers as well.McPherson details how the Teamsters have asked the U.S. Trade Representative and Congress to open the TPP process so the public can comment on how it wold impact the dairy industry. They haven't. He also explains how the TPP is following in the footsteps of NAFTA:
Why should we believe that this one will be any different?
I think we already have the answer. I think that the answer is that it won’t be. That’s why, although this agreement will impact all of us in virtually every aspect of our lives – including the milk we pour into our cereal every morning – we haven’t been able to see it. It’s a big, bad secret. We know the drill. After working on a multi-volume document for over 3 years – it will be shoved in front of Congress for a rushed, take it or leave it vote – and we’ll be told it has to pass or the world will end.In closing, McPherson calls on Oregon lawmakers to get involved by speaking to federal elected officials about the TPP's secret negotiation process. He urges them to tell U.S. policymakers to take dairy off the table. Let's follow his lead and tell lawmakers to stop messing with dairy!

WOW rally recap: Almost too many to keep track of
If it hasn’t come to your state, it is going to be coming to your state real soon. You need to stand proud. You need to stand strong. There are a lot of Governor Walkers out there. There’s probably one in your state right now. Those are the words of Sen. Jon Erpenbach, one of the 14 Wisconsin Democratic state senators who left the state in an attempt to block
It has come to Tennessee, where people protested the Legislature's attempt to strip teachers of their collective bargaining rights.
Troopers forcibly carried out seven union supporters from the Tennessee's legislative office complex on Tuesday after their protest disrupted a Senate committee hearing
The disruption occurred after hundreds of labor supporters gathered for a midday protest near the Capitol to denounce a bill to strip teachers of their collective bargaining rights. The seven arrested were among those who stood up during the hearing and began chants about "union busting" by the Legislature.
Most demonstrators left the hearing room after a half-hour, but a small group tried to lock arms to keep from being removed.Rally Girl tells us where else it has arrived:
In Eugene, Ore. on Friday, hundreds of residents took to the streets in the name of justice. Protesting against corporate greed, both public and private sector employees marched in solidarity with Wisconsin.
Two thousand miles away in Medina, Ohio, more than 500 people gathered to protest Senate Bill 5, which, if passed, would rewrite collective bargaining laws for public employees.
U.S. Rep. (and Teamster good friend) Betty Sutton, (D-Copley Township), spoke to attendees, calling the bill an attack on workers and the middle class. And Democracy Now has more:
It is the middle class that makes this country strong. We have to say "enough is enough."In New Haven, Conn., Al Sharpton greeted protestors rallying against Mayor John DeStefano, who, in the name of budget cuts laid off dozens of city employees including 16 police officers.
In South Carolina, thousands of teachers, religious leaders and state workers gathered at the capitol building on Sunday in opposition to cuts targeted at education, healthcare and other state services. In Austin, Texas, more than 10,000 protesters swarmed the grounds of the capitol Saturday to denounce Gov. Rick Perry’s proposal to fire educators, increase class sizes and cut programs. On Friday, protesters in Maine filled the capitol building to take a stand against Gov. Paul LePage’s plan to strip $18 million from the state’s Fund for a Healthy Maine. Also on Friday, concerned parents and citizens in Maryland’s Prince George’s County gathered at a local school to protest budget cuts that could leave hundreds of low-income, magnet high school students without school buses. Meanwhile, protests in response to Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder’s plan to tax the public and private pensions of senior citizens are scheduled for Tuesday in Lansing.
