ALEC pushing No Rights At Work in Penn.
The Benedict Arnold Koch brothers' campaign to impoverish the middle class is moving to Pennsylvania even as working families fight them off in Missouri.
Bruce Vail at Talking Union reports:
Let's hope.
Bruce Vail at Talking Union reports:
Backed by powerful national business interests, conservative legislators in Pennsylvania announced last week a new push to bring so-called “right-to-work” laws to the Keystone state. State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe said January 22 that he and five other Republican legislators would introduce a package of bills aimed at crippling the ability of labor unions to collect dues from members.
Pennsylvania labor leaders say the package is part of a broad assault on labor that began in 2010 when the GOP won control of the governor’s office and both houses of the legislature.
It’s no coincidence that the proposal comes hard on the heels of similar legislation in Michigan ... the Pennsylvania effort is part of a nationwide campaign against unions by rightwing business groups such as the David Koch-backed Americans for Prosperity and the Tea Party organization FreedomWorks... (A) January fundraising appeal by FreedomWorks asking donors to finance a 2013 campaign to de-fund unions specifically named Pennsylvania.
All of these attacks can be linked back to the American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC, he says, a business-funded group supporting anti-worker initiatives nationwide. Legislative language in the Michigan and Pennsylvania anti-union bills are strikingly similar to ALEC’s own model right-to-work bill, he notes, and Metcalfe has well-documented ties to the group. The good news, reports Vail, is that Pennsylvania labor leaders don't think it will pass because there are enough union-friendly Republicans and Democrats in the Legislature.
Let's hope.

Ruh-roh: No Rights at Work coming to Pennsylvania?
This just in: Anti-worker extremist politicians in Pennsylvania held a news conference this morning to introduce a package of bills that would weaken workers' rights.
Of course, that's not what they say it does.
The Patriot-News reports,
Of course, that's not what they say it does.
The Patriot-News reports,
Sponsors of what's called the "Pennsylvania Open Workforce Initiative" -- a package of Right to Work bills -- along with leading Right to Work advocates, are hosting a press conference this morning to introduce what they bill as "zero-cost legislative measures to create jobs and restore basic freedoms to Pennsylvania workers."
Today's announcement could signal the commencement of a bruising political debate over workers' rights and the status and power of labor unions vs. Pennsylvania employers. It would echo pitched battles in other Rust Belt states...
However, Pennsylvania is one of only four states having a Republican governor and a Republican-controlled legislature that does not have a right-to-work law. And recently, Gov. Tom Corbett said Pennsylvania “lacks the will” to pass a right-to-work bill. His spokesman has said that the governor supports the legislation and would sign it, but that a bill is unlikely to pass the Legislature. Previously-introduced right-to-work bills have languished in Pennsylvania’s Legislature. They languished in Michigan, too. Look what happened there.

Teamsters heading out to hear President Obama in Denver on Oct. 24 |
Our Colorado brothers and sisters saw President Obama in Denver earlier this week. The Denver Post reported,
President Barack Obama asked huddling supporters in a chilly City Park on Wednesday to stick with him for another four years, calling his GOP opponent out of touch on America's problems and arguing that the presidential election is about trust.
Polls say Romney and Obama are in a statistical tie in Colorado.Obama stood with sleeves rolled up beneath overcast skies and boasted about his frenetic schedule with nine swing state stops in a no-sleep 38-hour stretch, 13 days before the election.
Teamsters from Local 30 in Pennsylvania were phone banking for President Obama in Greensburg -- with none other than former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean. In the photo above are Roger Foley, Carl "Hands" Paullet from Teamsters Joint Council 40, Gov. Dean and Jan Foley.
To the left is a picture of Local 993 President Mike Magnani speaking with his members at the general membership meeting on Wednesday. Mike asked his members to vote for President Obama to protect their jobs. He reminded his members that they have until Nov 2 to vote early.

- Manpower here (in Macao) is cheap.
- Tax rates in Macau are much higher than in Vegas, but we intend to balance that with the much cheaper manpower here.

Teamsters mobilizing for August 10-11 Philly rally
Pennsylvania Teamsters will join thousands of workers and labor advocates as they converge on Philadelphia next month for the “Workers Stand for America” mobilization. And at least two tractor-trailers from Locals 107 and 776 will be on hand to demonstrate Teamster power at the demonstrations.
The rallies, which we blogged about yesterday, will bring tens of thousands of workers from around the country together to demand a Second Bill of Rights for workers in America. Included among these rights are the right to full employment, a living wage and a voice at work.
There will be two protests as part of the Workers Stand for America action. A rally on Friday August 10 will feature speakers from the Philadelphia AFL-CIO and Building Trades and John Dougherty from IBEW 89. A reception will be held at the Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown Hotel later in the evening. The main rally kicks off at 11 am on Saturday August 11 and will take place at Eakins Oval by the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
Teamster locals in Pennsylvania, along with Joint Council 53 and the Pennsylvania Conference of Teamsters, are encouraging members to participate in this historic mobilization to push back against corporate greed and win economic justice for workers.
As the war on workers continues to undermine the livelihoods of middle class families around the country, a demonstration like this couldn’t be more urgent.
We've got to stand and fight. Otherwise, corporate America and their politician servants will not end the war on workers.
Click here to sign the Second Bill of Rights. And for more information on the Workers Stand for America action, contact Teamsters Joint Council 53 at teamstersc53@yahoo.com or the Pennsylvania Conference of Teamsters at pateamsters@verizon.net
Let’s bring Teamster Power to the streets of Philly!

Made in PA underwear co. expects to grow
Remember when we told you about that new company that's selling men's underwear made in America? ABC News liked the story and did a feature on it, adding information about the Pennsylvania company that manufactures the boxers and briefs. It's called Fessler USA, in Orwigsburg, and it expects to add jobs this year.
The manufacturer told ABC that they were impressed with the energy and vision of Jake Bronstein, the New York designer who wanted to sell underwear made in the USA.
Reports ABC:
“He didn’t just come to us with a product and a desire to make money. This guy wants to be a business partner of ours and wants to make this company better,” Brian Meck, vice president of sales and marketing for FesslerUSA, said. “That has really resonated with everybody and creates a passion, a belief and a desire with everyone at the company to make it succeed. It’s unprecedented for any start-up we’ve ever worked with in the fashion industry.”
With manufacturing secured, Bronstein turned to Kickstarter, a website where people are able to support a variety of projects, to raise funding and create demand. Within days the response exceeded his expectations.
Bronstein’s initial goal was to raise $30,000; to date he has raised more than $190,000 and in the process has became the most highly-funded fashion project in Kickstarter’s history.
“If this builds up and grows the way that it should, we will hire ten to 40 employees over a 12 to 18 month period,” Meck told ABC News. FesslerUSA currently employs 110 people...
As the company attempts to scale up, Bronstein said he believes the key to attracting customers is quality.“I’d like to say Made in America is better, but it will only be better if we make it better,” Bronstein said. ”I think I’ve convinced a lot of people to buy an American brand of underwear, but we’re really fighting to send them something else instead, which is their favorite pair of underwear that happens to have been made in America.”The video above is a little dated; since then Flint and Tinder raised $190,000.

PA guv, sen., not invited to Labor Day parade
Wow. Pennsylvania really has its protest on these days.
Palmyra, Pa., is where the foreign students who paid to be in a cultural exchange program ended up in a Hershey's sweatshop packaging Kit-Kats. Some of them walked off the job, with the support of local unions and the National Guestworker Alliance.
In Williamsport, workers staged a mock funeral for jobs (like they did in Texas) outside of the office of Rep. Lou Barletta, an anti-worker extremist.
Another anti-worker extremist, Sen. Pat Toomey, has been followed by "Toomey Trackers" -- two unemployed workers -- in a Toomeymobile. They've been trying to get a meeting with him to talk about jobs (like they did in Wisconsin and New York). When Toomey finally held town hall meetings, they showed up to tell him to stop destroying America. In Jim Thorpe, workers held "Where are the Jobs?" signs.
Now we're learning that unions in Pittsburgh did not invite two anti-union politicians, Gov. Tom Corbett and Sen. Pat Toomey, to its Labor Day March for Jobs. Reports Amanda Terkel at The Huffington Post:
Pennsylvania AFL-CIO spokesman Marty Marks said that only friends of the labor movement, regardless of political party, are invited to march in the Pittsburgh Labor Day parade. The local labor council reimburses the city for parade-related expenses.
About six Republican politicians were invited to march this year, along with a larger number of Democratic officials. Invited guests include U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy (R), U.S. Sen. Bob Casey (D) and state Sen. John Pippe (R-Allegheny).Unfortunately, Toomey is on the congressional supercommittee to reduce the deficit. He's a staunch advocate of cutting government spending and refuses to consider raising taxes on corporations and the wealthy. Yesterday, Think Progress reported that Toomey believes hurricane relief should be offset by budget cuts. Reports Think Progress,
Thousands of Pennsylvania residents are still without power from the storm, while 13 counties in the state have been approved for federal aid. The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency said that it’s “far too early to know” an exact damage figure.
