Workers' wages aren't the problem -- corporate tax breaks are!

Income inequality is a growing problem in this country. But you would never know that by the actions of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and their corporate cronies who keep trying to take even more pay away from hardworking Americans.

The latest effort involves the move to roll back prevailing wage laws in states across the nation. Pushed for years by ALEC, the effort is making headway in states such as Indiana, Nevada and West Virginia, where Republican-controlled legislatures are buying into the argument that low wages for skilled professionals are OK if it means the state has to pay less.

Henry Burks, a 57-year-old union electrician in Indianapolis, said he will likely lose a quarter of his salary if Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R.) signs the bill there into law:
This is going to inhibit me from taking care of my family. Our wages will go down. The contractors we work for won't get as many jobs. Maybe I'll have to find work outside of Indiana.
Prevailing wage laws were passed in many states during the Great Depression to stop companies from offering low bids for projects that ultimately were covered by paying workers low wages. The law, which exists in 32 states and on federal contracts, ensures that private contractors pay workers on these public projects a salary in line with other workers doing similar work in a given geographical region.

Too many state lawmakers, however, are now looking to tamp down on such rules. This when many states at the same time are doling out tax breaks to corporations raking in record profits. It just isn't right!

Luckily, there are some standing up to this madness. Wisconsin state Sen. Howard Marklein, a Republican, announced he would oppose legislation that would repeal prevailing wage in that state, ensuring the bill won't make it through committee:
The prevailing wage law isn't perfect by any means, but I've got people in my district, contractors and workers, who are affected by it. I'm not comfortable at this point with full repeal.
More elected officials need to keep the needs of workers in mind when they go to vote on such legislation. Because the Teamsters will remember!

Workers in RTW states make $1,558 a year less

Earlier this year, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker signed into law so-called "right-to-work" (RTW) legislation that curbs collective bargaining rights. And a new report makes it clear how much it will cost workers there and in other RTW states.

Teamsters helped defeat RTW in West Virginia earlier this year.
An Economic Policy Institute (EPI) document notes that wages are 3.1 percent lower in states that impede union rights than they are in free bargaining ones. That's after taking cost of living, demographics and labor market characteristics into account. The result is that union and non-union workers alike in RTW states make $1,558 less each year.

Will Kimball, the report's co-author and an EPI research assistant, says in a press release:
Policymakers who are concerned by the three-and-a-half decades of wage stagnation that have plagued American workers should be trying to strengthen unions. Collective bargaining is a clear way to raise wages, and right to work laws undercut it.
In addition, those living in RTW-for-less states are less likely to have employee-sponsored health insurance or pension coverage. They have fewer workplace protections, which on Worker's Memorial Day, we should all recognize is not a good thing for the a person's health or safety. In short, they are getting screwed.

It's time for elected officials to see through the ruse that is right-to-work.

Scott Walker signs right-to-work bill at company that shipped jobs to Mexico

One way to keep the fight alive: Pay your union dues!
Wisconsin job-killer Gov. Scott Walker signed a right-to-work bill today at Badger Meter, a Brown Deer company that moved Wisconsin jobs to Mexico in 2009.

Badger Meter, which makes products for water utilities, may even have more employees in Mexico than in Wisconsin.

The company's shop floor workers were not allowed to attend the bill-signing event, but dozens of legislators and business leaders were. Outside, protesters picketed with signs that said right to work is bad for workers, according to the Milwaukee Business Journal.

Wisconsin Teamsters fought with all their hearts against the bill, which was rushed through the Legislature once Republicans knew they had the votes.

Wayne Schultz, President of Teamsters Joint Council 39 in Milwaukee, issued a statement denouncing Walker:
Gov. Walker has done a great disservice to every working man and woman in the state of Wisconsin today. This fight does not end today – we will continue to fight in any way [we] can to rid our state of this destructive law.
Bill Carroll, Political Liaison for Joint Council 39, said working men and women must keep the fight alive. Carroll said:
We have the power of numbers – every working man and woman and every union member in Wisconsin must stand together to stop the continued erosion of our rights and our way of life by outside special interests.
Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa said right-to-work laws are designed to attack working families and the middle class by weakening their strongest advocate, labor unions. Hoffa said in a statement:
Wisconsin is now the 25th state to adopt right-to-work laws as politicians like Walker push forward the agenda of their right-wing task masters. The Koch brothers, through Americans for Prosperity and the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), have poured millions of dollars into states across the country to push right-to-work legislation.
These corporate interests will not stop in Wisconsin – they continue to attack working families, moving from state to state. We must remain strong and fight them wherever right-to-work legislation is introduced.
I make this pledge to you – the Teamsters Union will not stand on the sidelines – we will fight right-to-work wherever it is introduced and protect working families.
