People need to preach importance of unions

PHOENIX -- Lawmakers and activists let the thousands of Netroots Nation conference attendees know last week that workers have the power. They just need to harness it.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren at Netroots conference.
In keynote addresses and smaller panel discussions, speakers shared stories about the successes and failures in trying to embolden a movement that puts the people above the powerful. They let it be known that it wouldn't be easy, but it is necessary to take this country back from corporate rule.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) brought conventioneers to their feet by repeatedly stating that issues such as income inequality, retirement security, financial reform and student loan debt are ranked as important ones by the public, even if they are too-often ignored by many on Capitol Hill.
"On these key economic issues, these economic issues that will shape the country, America is progressive. But insider Washington can't hear you; it turns its back. So it's on us to show what we believe in and fight for those values you believe in."
She also noted the importance that unions have in creating a solid middle class. Warren said the decline in income for hardworking Americans can be directly linked to undermining of the labor movement in the U.S.

The senator's thoughts echoed those of participants on a panel looking at how unions can provide solutions to the nation's current economic shortcomings. Several of them noted that a growth in union membership is essential to making a dent in income inequality.

Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.) noted workers are currently pitted against a big business-dominated system that is doing everything it can to stop organizing nationwide.
"This has been a very deliberate, long-run effort of corporate America primarily and government to strip away the ability of unions to organize."
To change that, union advocates need to reframe the discussion, panelists said. That means explaining to Americans that a union contract is the best way to raise wages, ensure a secure retirement and receive paid leave for vacation as well as sick time.

Neera Tanden, president of the Center for American Progress, also said pro-worker activists need expand on how better-paid workers would help boost the U.S. economy overall.
"When wages are stagnant in this country, consumption drags and growth drags. It's not the most complicated argument in the world, but we need to make it over and over."

Ex-Citigroup CEO sides with Teamsters on banking reform

The Teamsters have long called for financial reform. Now a retired Citigroup chief executive who was once one of Wall Street’s biggest proponents of the creation of mega-banks has seen the light. John Reed, who led Citigroup from 1984 to 2000 and then served as the head of the New York Stock Exchange, now says banking rules need to be changed to avoid another economic crash.

Well, better late than never.
Reed led Citigroup -- one of the nation’s largest banks -- when it was ramping up in size. He pushed for a repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act when Citi wanted to dabble in both investment and commercial banking, which was barred under the law. So in 1999 he and his big banking friends got it changed. But he now says the current business model is broken and the law needs to be reinstated.

Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), John McCain (R-Ariz.), Angus King (I-Maine) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) introduced an updated version of Glass-Steagall in July that attempts to rein in the financial chaos of Wall Street.  It would require banks that accept federally insured deposits to focus on traditional lending and not engage in more risky securities trading. But now the lawmakers need to move the process forward.
The current law allows banks to gamble customers’ hard-earned dollars in shady dealings like the creation of derivatives that puts workers’ money at risk.

While filing legislation that would prevent many of the financial failings that led to the bank bailouts is a good first step, a bill alone isn’t enough. Congress must take action now. Failing to do so will ensure a repeat of the financial meltdown of 2008.
Stay tuned...

Whiny-baby bankster wants more love

Don't give him any.

Last week at the annual gathering of super-wealthy elitists in Davos, Switzerland, bankster Jamie Dimon whined for at least the 12th time about criticism of banks. They only, you know, caused the Great Recession. As the Economic Populist points out,
Most of us are worried about job security, stagnant incomes, loss of pensions and benefits, lack of health insurance, home foreclosures. But the banksters ..."think the biggest challenge for the industry is overcoming public anger about bonuses and compensation."
Here's Reuters reporting on Dimon's complaint:
...the JPMorgan Chase chief executive once again lambasted the media and politicians for portraying all bankers as greedy evil-doers. It was at least the 12th time since the start of the financial crisis that Dimon has complained about Wall Street critics painting all bankers as cut from the same cloth. But the timing of his latest outburst seemed odd.
Reuters notes that Dimon likes to maintain a regular-guy image. As one critic said, "he is a man of the people because he wants a hand in every wallet."

During his bankster career, Dimon and his banks have
You will not be at all surprised to learn that Dimon took home more than $66 million in cash and stock since 2006.

Economist Simon Johnson blames the big banks for something even worse: causing the government's gigantic budget deficit. (Note: for those of you who think the bank bailout is over and "the TARP has been paid back," you're forgetting the trillions of dollars the Federal Reserve lent to banks at near-zero interest rates. Which, of course, they're lending to you at double-digit interest rates on your credit card.)

Writes Johnson in a terrific piece called "The Ruinous Fiscal Impact of Big Banks,"
Public deficits and debt ...have ballooned in the last three years for one simple reason – the big banks at the heart of our financial system blew themselves up. On this point, the conclusions of the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission, which appeared last week, are very clear and utterly compelling.
No one forced the banks to take on so much risk. Top bankers lobbied long and hard for the rules that allowed them to behave recklessly. And these same people effectively captured the hearts, minds and, some would say, pocketbooks of the regulators – in the sense that a well-regarded regulator can and often does go work for a bank afterward.
The mega-recession, which is starting to look more like a mini-depression in terms of employment terms for the United States (which lost 6 percent of employment and is still down 5 percent from the pre-crisis peak), caused a big decline in tax revenues.
So remember that budget deficits are not the fault of the teachers, firefighters, nurses, sanitation workers and other public employees who are losing pay, benefits and their jobs. They're the fault of those whiny-baby banksters.

Victory! SEC sides with Teamsters on Navistar executive pay proposal

Yay! Financial regulators ruled yesterday that Navistar can't prevent shareholders from voting on a Teamster proposal to limit golden parachutes.

Actually, one Navistar executve got a platinum parachute last  year. According to the Teamsters press release, Navistar paid CEO Daniel Ustian $24.2 million to leave.  Can you say "excessive?"

My boss, Jim Hoffa, said "Navistar is a company with red flags when it comes to pay." Hoffa said the Securities and Exchange Commission's ruling was important because it interpreted the new financial reform law properly. He pointed out that,
“Congress made clear that the Dodd-Frank Act must not limit shareholders’ right to make proposals on executive compensation, and the SEC’s decision yesterday upholds that mandate. Allowing Navistar to misrepresent the new financial reform requirements could have set a dangerous precedent, robbing investors of their right to demand a voice on compensation windfalls for departing executives.”

Good question

Bob Kuttner asks why the Tea Party is giving a free ride to Republicans protecting bankers.

In today's Huffington Post he writes,
Two years and counting into the most severe financial collapse in nearly a century, bankers still rule. Republicans protect bankers from reform, yet amazingly masquerade as the party of populist backlash. If Democrats let the right play this double game, shame on them. It's only possible because too many Democrats are too cozy with the same bankers.

Kuttner was prompted to write because he's rightly concerned that financial reform may not make it through Congress. What looked like a sure thing a few weeks ago is now in jeopardy because of the death of Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia and the wavering of several Republican senators who previously voted for the bill.

Kuttner tells us

...sure enough, three of the four Republican supporters have gone wobbly. Olympia Snowe of Maine voted for the Senate bill, but is now making equivocal noises about whether she'll support the conference bill (which is weaker in some respects than the Senate's version.) Likewise Chuck Grassley of Iowa.

The always wily Scott Brown of Massachusetts threatened to withhold his vote until the House and Senate leaders agreed to scrap a $19 billion tax on large banks. He voted for the senate bill, but now Brown is warning that
he may vote against the final bill anyway. Apparently there is no honor among thieves. The financial industry was the largest donor to Brown's Senate campaign.
The bill isn't perfect, but it's a desperately needed improvement. Prudent regulation would have averted the global economic crisis. Without it, we may well see another financial meltdown.
