Here's the truth: Congressional Republicans don't care about the deficit
As American workers struggle to find jobs that don't exist, Republicans in Congress won't allow any extension of unemployment insurance benefits unless it’s “paid for” with money other government programs.
They’ve never demanded that of Republican administrations, notes R.J. Eskow at the Campaign for America's Future.
He calls them out for being disingenuous, mean-spirited, and insincere. But he's not too pleased with Democrats who go along with 'pay-for.'
Why aren’t Democrats instead speaking up against the “pay for” logic that gives a free pass to the wealthy and corporations – especially when the total cost is a blip, a rounding error, on a $1 trillion 2014 federal budget?
Economically, “pay for” is a Catch-22: It means every job-creating proposal must be offset with job-killing cuts elsewhere.
Besides, it’s not as if Republicans actually mean what they say. Their concerns about deficit spending inevitably disappear when the subject is tax cuts for the wealthy or goodies for defense contractors. They don’t really care about “paying for” anything. That’s just a rhetorical device, a stalling tactic against a program which (like so many popular and useful programs) they simply hate.
If Republicans really wanted to “pay as they go” for deficit-increasing measures, they won’t keep extending “temporary” tax breaks for favored constituencies. Instead they’d adopt the proposal from Howard Gleckman of Forbes magazine, who suggested that Congress apply similar “pay-for” rules to the dozens of “temporary” tax extensions that it routinely renews every year. As Gleckman points out, the benefit of those deficit-increasing tax breaks go to groups that include “Manhattan real estate developers, auto racetrack owners, movie studios, distillers of Puerto Rican rum, multinational corporations” and other business interests.
When it comes time to renew these tax breaks, all the deficit fears and “pay-go” talk go right out the window.

Senate moves forward with unemployment insurance extension
This just in: The U.S. Senate voted to move forward with a bill to restore unemployment benefits. The Senate will have to vote again, and the House will have to go along with it, but still it's good news for Teamsters and the entire country.
Because without the extension, the U.S. economy will lose $1 billion a week. Unemployed people spend every dime of their benefits, and that helps stimulate commerce. (Tax breaks for the rich, on the other hand...)
The Washington Post reports:
The Senate voted narrowly Tuesday to move ahead with a measure to extend unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless, despite Republican demands for corresponding budget cuts.
Immediately after the surprise vote, President Obama urged Congress to quickly finish the job of providing “a vital economic lifeline” to millions of Americans, part of a public and private campaign to sway wavering Republicans to come aboard. “We’ve got to make sure this recovery leaves nobody behind,” he said, stressing that the deep recession that gripped the nation at the beginning of his first term “was so devastating that there are still a lot of people who are struggling.”Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa sent a letter to every member of Congress today, urging them to extend the unemployment benefits. To the senators, he wrote:
I urge you to swiftly reinstate the Federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program which abruptly expired on December 28th. The failure of Congress to extend the program has already cost nearly 1.3 million Americans their primary lifeline during an ongoing and difficult search for work.
The EUC program already helped millions of Americans avoid the grip of poverty during the great recession. With an estimated one job currently available for every three job seekers, the labor market is structurally unable to employ all of those who have been removed from the EUC program. The long-term unemployed face an especially uphill battle, with approximately 37% of the unemployed having been out of work for over 26 weeks.You can help. Call your representatives in Congress.
