ALEC gets a whitewash from the political press

You can draw a straight line from the Wisconsin uprising of 2011 through the No Rights At Work fight in Michigan to the Moral Monday protests now raging in North Carolina.  You can throw in the SB 5 fight in Ohio, the Prop. 32 battle in California, and skirmishes over voter suppression, privatization, regressive taxation and corporate empowerment in the 23 Republican-controlled legislatures in the country.

What you have is a national reaction to a single well-funded campaign to let billionaires take even more money from poor, middle- and working-class Americans.

The massive protests, the arrests, the Statehouse turmoil, the costly campaigns -- they're all convulsions over  the same thing: ALEC's attempt to dismantle America's public institutions and turn our government over to corporations.

And yet the political press treats each skirmish as an isolated outbreak.

One reporter who gets it is the Esquire blogger Charles Pierce. He nails it in a recent post:
...the elite political press is missing the real political action in this country because, for the most part, it concentrates either on what's going on in Washington, or in the horse race aspects of whatever election is next. But the real action -- and all the real damage -- is being done out in the states, especially in those states in which the 2010 elections brought in majority Republican legislatures and majority Republican governors. This is part of what we play for laughs every Thursday when we survey what's goin' down in The Laboratories Of Democracy. But what's goin' down is highly organized, tightly disciplined, and very sharply directed. By now, the American Legislative Exchange Council, and what it's about, is an open secret. Everybody covering politics knows about it. Everybody covering politics knows where the money for its activities comes from. Everybody in politics knows what its political aims are. And yet, when we have retrograde laws and policies pop up in state after state -- most notably in recent days, in the newly insane state of North Carolina -- it is always treated as a kind of localized outbreak.
How badly the press gets it wrong would be hilarious if it weren't so dangerous. A typical mistake is to describe the attempted corporate takeover of government as some sort of disagreement between "liberals" and "conservatives."

There's nothing conservative about a group that seeks to pervert democracy, eradicate public schools, destroy First Amendment rights, loot working people, plunder the public treasury and sell off every piece of public property for corporate profit-making opportunities.

And yet the Associated Press recently characterized ALEC as "a conservative think tank" -- in a story about how it's violating Wisconsin's Open Records law.

In a story about Georgia state lawmakers "staying informed," a gullible reporter for the Forsyth News notes that they intend to travel to "gather information" or "participate in panels" at ALEC's annual meeting. No mention of the lavish (and well-documented) resort settings or the bacchanals with deep-pocketed campaign donors.

Worst of all are the credulous accounts of ALEC's clownish reports on state economic outlooks, something no self-respecting economists would associate themselves with. You just know there's something wrong with ALEC's "Rich States, Poor States" analysis when it cites  job-killer Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker for his success in creating jobs.

Unions are fighting the Benedict Arnold Koch brothers purchase of the newspaper chain that owns the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune. (You can sign a petition here.) The brothers are key players in the billionaire empowerment movement and strong supporters of ALEC. But judging by the press coverage we've gotten so far, the Kochification of American newspapers is already well underway.
They already write some of them.

Calif. Teamsters register 23K voters in 'No On 32' campaign

How about a shoutout to our brothers and sisters in California who registered 23,000 new voters! They did it as part of their campaign to defeat the Billionaires' Bill of Rights, otherwise known as Proposition 32.

Prop 32 would stifle unions' political speech while letting corporations and billionaires continue to spend freely on propaganda.

Brother Doug Bloch from Joint Council 7 in San Francisco tells us how they did it. (We're cross-posting from the California Labor Fed):
California Teamsters began our No on 32 campaign with two kickoffs in April and July.  The April kickoff, sponsored by Joint Council 42, drew over 1,400 Teamsters from Southern California.  Then in July, Joint Council 7 brought together over 800 members from Bakersfield all the way up to the Oregon border.  Members were educated about the dangers of Proposition 32 and armed with voter registration cards.
Business Agents, stewards, and volunteers got to work.  Then in September, over 40 members came off the truck statewide to kick our program into high gear.  This lost-timer program was supported by our members’ own contributions.
Joint Council 7 took a caravan of Teamster trucks to blitz our worksites.  We started out in Bakersfield and worked our way up to Stockton, down through the Bay Area out to Watsonville, and doubled back to Sacramento.  In the end, we hit 33 worksites in 21 days and spoke to over 3,000 members.  At many stops in the caravan, we were joined by Teamster-supported candidates and elected officials, but the focus was on our members.
In Southern California, Joint Council 42 sent a squadron of 25 rank-and-file members to blitz worksites from San Diego to Santa Barbara in an aggressive program that touched thousands of members.
Teamsters General President James Hoffa also barnstormed the state, making several stops along the way in Southern and Northern California.  We did our first ever California membership conference call, drawing over 19,000 participants to a call with President Hoffa.
When the smoke cleared, we registered over 23,000 Teamsters to vote statewide – a 10% increase in our overall membership.  Over 90% of the registrations were vote by mail.  Now we join our brothers and sisters to GET OUT THE VOTE!
Awesome work!

Calif. Teamsters fighting Prop 32

Our brothers and sisters in California have strong feelings about the Billionaires' Bill of Rights, also known as Prop 32.

A nurse named DeAnn McEwen explained why she and her colleagues oppose Prop 32 on the California Labor Fed's website:
...I know how wealth is valued over the health of my patients with today’s recreation of an aristocracy born of speculation and no sense of community values.
The San Francisco Chronicle today disclosed that corporations outspend unions by at least 3-1 to dominate elections and public policy in California, according to a nonpartisan group called California Common Sense.
Since 2000, business interests alone have poured an obscene $1.7 billion into California campaigns to sway candidate and initiative campaigns. Imagine a world in which that money might have gone to our schools, or healthcare, or creating jobs, and you get a sense how wildly corrupted our political system has become, aided by disgraceful court rulings that big money equals free speech.
That substantial current advantage is apparently not enough for the giant corporations, billionaires, and clandestine super political action committees that are funneling tens of millions of dollars into a campaign to pass the deceptive and dishonest Proposition 32 which would effectively end the ability of unions to compete at all in the electoral arena.

War on Workers moves to Calif. from Wisco

Resistance fighters in the War on Workers.
California Teamsters are fighting hard against an attempt to destroy workers rights through the ballot. Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa traveled to Los Angeles and San Jose over the weekend to lead rallies against Proposition 32.

The Center for Media and Democracy explains:
The fight to dismantle America's unions has moved from Wisconsin to California. This time, billionaires and big business are attempting to use California's referendum mechanism to bar all unions from using money deducted from employee paychecks for political purposes...
...with some $43 million being spent by unions, and election day still four weeks away, the current life and death battle for the right to organize a union may dwarf all that came before...
...While the language is made to sound evenhanded, the measure is a thinly veiled attack on the only institution that systematically collects its funding via payroll deduction -- unions. You can ban churches and liquor stores from collecting contributions in little baskets, but when only one entity does it, only one entity is going to be wiped out.
The California Labor Fed exposes the big money (pretending to represent small business) behind Prop. 32:
...the deceptively named “Stop Special Interest Money” Act is now being funded by an equally deceptively named front group, the Small Business Action Committee (SBAC), which has dropped millions into Prop 32, the ballot measure that leading newspapers call “a fraud,” “a cynical ploy” and “a deceptive sham”  because it would silence the voices of workers while giving corporate special interests even more power and influence.
Here's how much some of the "small businesspeople" gave to SBAC:
  • $19,949,560 from Charles Munger Jr., who’s given millions to the state and county Republican parties, and also bankrolls a California Super PAC called “Spirit of Democracy.” Munger has spent more than $22 million on California elections in recent years, and would still be able to do so if Prop 32 passes.
  • $550,000 from retired Univision CEO Jerrold Perenchio, another one of the largest individual donors in California politics. He’s also the Founder and Chair of Chatwell Partners LLC, an investment firm that would be exempt from Proposition 32.
  • $350,000 from the New Majority PAC, which would in itself be exempt, and its contributors, which include real estate developers, hedge fund managers, venture capitalists, wealthy individuals and other major contributors, would also be exempt under Prop 32
  • $300,000 from private equity manager John Murray Pasquesi, whose Otter Capital LLC would be exempt under Prop 32
  • $1,000,000 from hedge fund executive William Oberndorf,  who has given almost a million to the California Republican Party in recent years. He’s also the head of two large companies that are exempt from Proposition 32.
Here's the latest ad:

And you can go here to help fight against Prop. 32.

Calif. Teamsters out in force against Prop 32

They have money, we have those boots on the ground.
Hundreds of Teamsters rallied yesterday against Proposition 32, the heinous ballot question that would take away workers' rights to political speech.

Dubbed the "Billionaires' Bill of Rights," the campaign for Prop. 32 receives millions in support from the super-rich, including $4 million from the Koch brothers.

Teamsters already registered more than 25,000 new voters from their ranks -- roughly 10 percent of the entire Teamster membership in California.

(Even Teamster puppies are fighting against Prop. 32.)

This weekend's rallies were aimed at mobilizing Teamsters who will receive absentee ballots this week.

Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa traveled to Los Angeles and San Jose to urge his brothers and sisters to fight hard against the attack on workers. A press release tells us,
"Proposition 32 is an attack on union workers by the same anti-union, corporate special interests that have waged war against organized labor across the country since the beginning of 2011,” Hoffa said. “Everything that Prop. 32 represents must be defeated here and now – California is the frontline of this battle. If we allow this anti-worker measure to go forward, it could spread across the country, further weakening our middle class.”
L.A. rally.
In Los Angeles, International Vice President Randy Cammack told members of Local 396,
Prop. 32, at its core, is an attack on workers, plain and simple. Prop. 32’s supporters disguised their attack as a ‘reform’ measure, but everyone from major newspaper editorial boards to good-government groups all agree that Prop 32 is not at all what it seems. (Cammack is also president of Joint Council 42 in Southern California.)
International Vice President Rome Aloise spoke to San Jose Teamsters (he's president of Joint Council 7 in Northern California).
Proposition 32 is bad for California’s families, communities and middle class. We must all join together to make sure that Proposition 32 is defeated in November.
San Jose Teamsters.

Kochs spend $4M on Prop 32

If California's Prop 32 is supposed to take money out of politics, why are the Koch brothers supporting it? They're the poster boys for the corporate takeover of our democracy.

Short answer: Prop 32 is about taking union money out of politics. That's why they call it the "Billionaires' Bill of Rights."

Here are the deets: The LA Times reported,
A group with ties to the conservative billionaire Koch brothers has dropped $4 million to pass a ballot measure that would severely limit the political activity of labor unions.
The new committee has just one donation -- $4 million from the American Future Fund, a conservative nonprofit organization whose stated mission is to promote “conservative and free-market principles...”  (Ed. note: Yeah, free for corporations, not so much for ordinary citizens.)...
No on 32 spokesman Brian Browkaw said the donation illustrated that the initiative would hurt unions while leaving corporate influence in tact. "The very same corporate special interests who carefully exempted themselves from Prop 32 and who stand to benefit from its passage – Big Oil, billionaire businessmen and the Super PACs linked to the Koch Brothers and Karl Rove – are now spending millions to pass Prop 32 and advance their interests at the expense of everyday Californians," he said .]
The donation comes as new polls show support for Proposition 32 slipping from its original highs of more than 60% support among likely voters. Proponents say it would limit political activities of corporations and labor unions, but its opponents, led by the state’s largest worker groups, say it is aimed at tempering unions’ political influence while leaving wide loopholes for corporations to funnel millions into state campaigns.
And here's a message from the LA County Fed:
It’s time to re-double our efforts on the phones. We know it requires having conversations with voters for us to defeat Prop. 32. Download this flyer for volunteer phonebank information.
If your union can turnout at least 10 people to make calls, we will bring the phonebank to you!
