ALEC's victims to hold newser tomorrow

The legislative roach motel known as ALEC (the American Legislative Exchange Council) holds its annual meeting in New Orleans this week. We call ALEC a legislative roach motel because it produces anti-worker bills that extremist state lawmakers take home and inflict on an unsuspecting public. Only recently have we learned how many of these corporate-written bills are cut-and-pasted into law.

Tomorrow, ALEC's victims will speak at a news conference in New Orleans. People for the American Way has all the deets, but here's the gist of it:
On Wednesday, August 3, a teacher, a small business owner, a reverend and a disenfranchised voter will speak out at a press conference to unveil the real human toll of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC)’s "model bills." ALEC is a vehicle by which corporations and politicians collaborate on blueprints for pro-corporate legislation to bring back to the states.
The news conference will be live streamed here.

Two days later, a protest against ALEC will be held at the Hale Boggs Federal Building in New Orleans by union members, community activists and faith groups. Check out the website. You might want to send the protesters a few bucks. They did a great job protesting ALEC in Cincinnati in April and are likely to get a lot more attention this go 'round.
