Here we go again. Another administration bends over for the multinationals that prefer not to pay their workers anything, but will settle for paying them next-to-nothing, at least for now. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood traveled to Mexico yesterday to sign a deal to open our border to dangerous Mexican trucks.
If we could stomach the mainstream media, we would read about how LaHood is finally upholding the U.S. end of Nafta. (Never mind that Mexico isn't upholding its end.) No respectable news outlet will actually report that opening the border will create jobs because there isn't anyone on the planet who believes it. But they will repeat LaHood's remarks that jobs will be created. Then they'll dismissively mention that Teamsters and independent drivers complain about safety, and they'll witlessly retype handouts from DOT about how Mexican trucks will comply with U.S. safety standards. They'll ignore the mountains of evidence that the government has never been able to guarantee that Mexican trucks meet our standards. Oh, and there will be no mention of the 40,000 people killed in Mexico's drug wars.
That's what they call "reporting" these days. (That, and hacking into the phone mail of crime victims.)
You can write your representative in Congress here and tell him or her to pull the plug on the Mexican truck program.
