Woo-hoo! Another Teamster organizing victory in CA!
Workers came together to form their union because of escalating disrespect from management. The company made abrupt and unfair changes in policy and fired or laid off more than 20 workers.
Todd Mendez, secretary-treasurer of Local 683, said he welcomed the newest members with great pride.
The worker committee did phenomenally well and was the driving force in this victory. They stood strong in the face of an extremely intense union-busting campaign. I would also like to thank the Teamsters Organizing Department for their staff and imperative support on this significant campaign.Gustavo Mitre, a 10-year employee and committee member, said the win was a long time coming:
Our strength and unity led us to victory and helped us overcome the company’s threats and intimidation tactics.The workers withstood a strong anti-union campaign that included empty promises, captive audience meetings and threats. Waste Management also brought in workers from other locations whose sole purpose was to try to bust the union drive, intimidate workers and tell lies about organizing attempts at other facilities. The company’s tactics not only failed but further angered and empowered workers.

Kitty litter in cigarettes, horsemeat in burritos
First we learn the spreading horse meat scandal now hits Taco Bell:
The latest round of tests conducted by Britain's Food Standards Agency found that ground beef used at all local Taco Bell locations contained trace amounts of horse DNA...Ikea had to stop selling Swedish meatballs after horse meat was found in them. Burger King also acknowledged that some of its burgers had horse meat in them.
Taco Bell released a statement in the U.S., saying:
Our domestic restaurants have not been, and will not be, impacted because we do not use any meat from Europe. We stand for quality and we use 100% premium beef. Like all beef in the United States, ours is USDA inspected and then passes our own 20 quality checkpoints.Well, maybe not for long, according to Food Safety News:
...the nearly 9 percent across-the-board budget cut could mean that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which oversees 80 percent of the food supply, could cut 2,100 food facility inspections and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, in charge of meat and poultry safety, could be forced to furlough all its employees for a total of 15 days to meet the reductions.Then there's this charming item about tobacco companies putting kitty litter in cigarettes to avoid a federal excise tax. Gawker tells us:
Apparently there is cat litter in cigarettes—or rather the clay found in cat litter is used in cigarettes as filler. This allows tobacco companies to "weigh down" their cigarettes so that they will fall into the "large cigar" category-helping the companies avoid a federal excise tax increase of 2,653%. The rule goes as follows:Corporate tax avoidance is a big reason the U.S. government doesn't have enough revenue to meet its obligations. Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa commented on that today:
It requires "a rolled tobacco product to weigh at least 3 pounds per 1,000 to be labeled as a 'large' or 'premium' cigar where taxes increased just 155 percent."This filler is legal; though the rule states that weight must be achieved to qualify as a large cigar, there is no stipulation about how this weight is achieved.
We cannot allow working people to again be victimized by the Republican Party’s ongoing battle to protect billionaires and multinational corporations from their responsibility to pay their fair share of taxes.
By not acting to end the sequester, Republicans are telling us that that these tax loopholes and their billionaire benefactors are more important than creating jobs and stimulating commercial activity in their own country. They prefer to defend an unfair tax code while attacking retirement and health benefits that Americans work all their lives to earn.Read the whole thing here.
This Teamster heroine died for the Voting Rights Act
CNN reminded us yesterday of Violet's sacrifice:
The murder of Viola Liuzzo was one of the most shocking moments in the civil rights movement. On a winding, isolated road outside Selma, Liuzzo was ambushed and shot to death by a car full of Ku Klux Klansmen.
Viola Liuzzo was murdered in this car on an isolated Alabama highway while she participated in a voting rights campaign in Selma, Alabama.
She was murdered while giving a ride to a 19-year-old black man, Leroy Moton, one of many civil rights marchers she had driven around Selma. Liuzzo had joined the movement's carpool system soon after arriving in the small Alabama town. Liuzzo's murder became international news. Her photo became a fixture in history books. Her name has been inscribed on civil rights memorials throughout the United States.
But people had far less sympathy for Liuzzo when she was murdered. Hate mail flooded her family's Detroit home, accusing her of being a deranged communist. Crosses were burned in front of the home. Her husband, Anthony Liuzzo Sr., had to hire armed guards to protect his family.The Teamsters have long honored Viola's memory, from the day James R. Hoffa attended her funeal on March 30, 1965 in Detroit to the present. An online tribute to Viola at teamster.org tells us:
Viola Liuzzo and her husband Anthony “Jim” Liuzzo, who retired after more than 16 years as a business agent of Teamsters Local 247, had always been a family with a purpose. They believed in racial equality, helping fellow union members in their struggle for economic justice or dignity on the job and fighting discrimination in all its form as they had done all their life.
Viola Liuzzo was an active member of her community and was a member of DRIVE— the Teamsters political and legislative arm. She could often be found attending various political meetings, away at a meeting of Congress on Racial Equality or other meetings that attract those who have a deep concern for their fellow men.
It came as no surprise to Anthony Liuzzo when his wife and mother of his five children called from the campus of Wayne State University, where she attended classes for sociology, to tell him she had to go to Selma, Alabama to assist the civil rights marchers.You can read more about her here.
This employer may think twice about provoking a strike
Perhaps the natural food distributor will think twice about trying to bust our great union.
Our brothers and sisters stood together in a very difficult struggle. The company fired 72 employees and permanently replaced them. The strike only ended after thousands of community members showed their solidarity with the warehouse workers and drivers.
On Feb. 7, UNFI Teamsters ratified a 5-year contract that increased wages and provided health and welfare protections. The company reinstated the 72 replaced workers.
Nineteen days later, UNFI (United Natural Foods, Inc.) revealed the cost of abusing workers in its Feb. 26 earnings report. According to Supermarket News
Shares of United Natural Foods Inc. fell about 4.8% Tuesday after the company trimmed its profit projections for the year in the wake of a recent labor strike.
The natural-product specialist said the Teamsters strike at its Auburn, Wash., distribution facility added about $3.6 million to its costs in the recently ended second fiscal quarter, and another $600,000 to $1 million in costs are expected to occur in the third quarter. The strike ended earlier this month.As Local 117 pointed out,
