Remembering James Garner, a strong union brother

James Garner, the handsome leading man who played Rockford and Maverick, was also an active member of his union, the Screen Actors Guild, later SAG-AFTRA

Garner died on July 29 at his home in California. He was 86.

He was a strong supporter of union rights and civil rights. According to Wikipedia,
On August 28, 1963, Garner was one of several celebrities to join Martin Luther King, Jr. in the "March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom." In his autobiography, Garner recalled sitting in third row listening to King's "I Have a Dream" speech.
Garner was a former SAG 2nd vice president (1960-61), SAG National Board member (1959) and a recipient of the SAG Life Achievement Award.

SAG-AFTRA issued a statement on the death of James Garner:
Garner received the award in 2004 for exemplifying the highest ideals of the acting profession, both in front of the camera and in his philanthropic endeavors. ... Garner dedicated time and resources to showing support for America’s service members and various political causes. He was a veteran of the Korean War and joined Martin Luther King Jr. for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963.
When he received the SAG Life Achievement Award, Garner expressed his appreciation for his fellow actors and his union.
“Actors are very special people, and I love each and every one of you. I have been a member of this guild for over 50 years, and it’s a great guild,” he said. “It’s the best guild in the world. I’m proud to be part of it. And just remember, you take damn good care of it, okay?”
“James Garner was the definition of the smooth, dashing leading man, but his talents were so much more than skin deep. He was a hard worker who dedicated himself wholly to whatever he set out to accomplish, whether it was serving his country or performing for the camera,” said SAG-AFTRA President Ken Howard.
Rest in peace, brother.

Who knew? Ga. film industry a bright spot for Teamsters

Actually, we knew the entertainment industry in Georgia is flourishing and creating good union jobs. Our members are working on the sets!

Lately they've been working more than ever. Between July 2011 and June 2012, Fortune reports 333 -- yup, 333 -- feature films, television movies, commercials and music videos were shot in Georgia. The state is now one of the top five in film production.

It's been a boon for Teamsters in Local 728 in Atlanta, where film director Tyler Perry has his own 200,000-square-foot studio. Atlanta Teamsters have worked on a number of productions lately, including the last X-Men, Identity Thief and the Vampire Diaries.

The entertainment industry has employed Georgia Teamsters for at least two generations. Stephen Roland, a Local 728 member since 1993, said his mother raised him on a set going back to the original Dukes of Hazzard. Now he works on theatrical productions operating anything that runs on gas or diesel with a steering wheel.

The reason for the recent entertainment boom in Georgia is the state tax incentive passed in 2008, Fortune reports.
Jeff Bennett, the deputy general counsel and associate executive editor of SAG-AFTRA says that the number of Georgia residents who have found union-covered work has increased 90% since its theatrical collective bargaining agreement in 2009.
The growth of the entertainment industry in Georgia has translated into increased union jobs for construction set builders, glaziers, hairdressers, and Teamster truck drivers who help move equipment and trailers to film sites, according to Lee Thomas, the director of the Georgia Film, Music, and Digital Entertainment Division.
The tax incentives lured Flight  to Atlanta in 2011. Local 728 Teamtsers worked on the movie, which stars Denzel Washington as an alcoholic airline pilot. Wikipedia explains,
The film's relatively small budget of $31 million, which (director Robert) Zemeckis later calculated was his smallest budget in inflation-adjusted dollars since 1980, was due to tax rebates from Georgia and from Zemeckis and Washington having waived their customary fees.
Local 728 has also worked on Zombieland, Joyful Noise, Fast and Furious 5, Hunger Games 2, Drop Dead Diva, 42, Identity Thief, Walking Dead and Anchorman 2.

Meet the Teamsters behind the Oscars

As you watch union actors, musicians and writers win Oscars tonight, don't forget they got plenty of help from Motion Picture Teamsters.

Brother Jake Kucera, a Teamster driver at US Foodservice, doesn't forget. He posted on the Teamsters Facebook page,
My son and I watch a movie till the end to see if it has the Teamster logo.
The Teamsters Union represents workers in the motion picture industry, including companies that produce feature films, television programs, commercials and live theatrical performances. Teamsters are drivers, wranglers, animal handlers, location managers, mechanics, dispatchers and casting directors. Location managers from Local 399 in Hollywood remind us how important the movie industry is to the local community in this video here.

Brother Matthew Sage worked on The Master, which received three Oscar nominations. He posted on Facebook:
12 years in... proud of my brotherhood! I was on THE MASTER for about 2 weeks. I believe it's up for something this year. I dig working on "period pieces ". All the actors walkin around set in costume, the sets...the craft service!
Brother Mike Davin from Local 249 in Pittsburgh tells us:
...did Dark Knight, worked with some great guys from local 399!!!
Brother Frank Gagliardo, now retired from Chicago Local 705, worked as an extra since 1992 -- starting with the movie Hoffa (which was nominated for two Oscars). Sister Becca Bernstein from Local 305 works on NBC's Grimm in Portland, Ore. Brother Geo Gordon from Local 407 in Cleveland is looking forward to Captain after working on Fun Size and Alex Cross.

Brother Lance Leis tells us he's been a movie Teamster since he was 19.
...it has been my world ever since..pulled numerous actors rigs...IMDB me...Local 492 (Albuquerque)
We ran Brother Lance through imdb.com and found he'd appeared as a driver or a transportation captain in about 30 films and television shows, including The Twilight Saga, Breaking Down Part I, Secretariat and The Killer Inside Me.

According to imdb, Brother Ian Bharath appeared as a driver in Safe, Be Kind Rewind, The Messenger and Factory Girl. Brother Donny Burdett got credits as a driver or transportation captain in more than 50 films, including three-time Academy Award winner The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

We'll leave you with this thought from Brother Donald C. Stjohn from Local 399, who worked on too many films to list!
Unfortunately no Oscars for drivers. We're as disposable as any other below the line worker. Leo Reed has our back though and has done a great job with our collective bargaining and keeping us working. I'm proud to be a Teamster first. I enjoy working in Hollywood and meeting the people who make recorded history. 15 years with approximately 15 to go. Stay strong!
