The crapification of almost everything

Remember when Levi's used to be good? The denim was so rugged you could practically stand them up when they were new, and they had real copper buttons. Now they're made overseas out of flimsy material and the buttons aren't even copper any more.

Levi's, like so many products, used to be made in America. Unfortunately, to many CEOs today, 'Made in America' means paying workers a living wage and decent benefits -- something they don't want to do. They'd rather outsource good American jobs and make cheap products overseas by workers who are little more than indentured servants.

The result is what the Naked Capitalist calls the 'crapification of almost everything.' Here's her rant about the cheap products we're forced to use today:
...Washing machines, dishwashers, and stoves all used to be good for forty years absent a leak-induced short or other unusual mishap. Now you are lucky to get ten...
Readers lament ... about how Sears Craftsman tools were terrific and the current tools under that name are poor imitations and it’s hard to find anything comparable to the old Craftsman line...
In my old days in investment banking, I dressed to look the part. By the mid 1990s, the deterioration in women’s clothing was evident. The tailoring and materials were markedly worse. ... everything got subtly shoddier ... In the winter, I live in cotton turtlenecks, black jeans, and pullover sweaters. Cotton turtlenecks have been systematically cheapened over the years. The length is shorter (and I prefer a hip-length shirt, both for warmth and to tuck more securely into pants). They are uniformly more fitted (which I don’t like), which uses less fabric. The turtlenecks themselves are shorter (I had a huge and unproductive argument with Land’s End when they shortened the necks by one inch and have never bought from them since). The cottons are thinner weave...
private equity ruined mattresses. Once the industry became a duopoly, the incumbents could foist crappy products on customers with impunity. Two sided mattresses (which last longer, not just because flipping them lets you wear both sides, but flipping is also better for the mattress for reasons not particularly worth explaining) were replaced with one-sided makes. Customers have been migrated away from spring mattresses to foam, which are cheaper to produce ... Yet the prices are higher in real terms despite the degradation.
The Naked Capitalist blames Wall Street, which forced businesses to focus on short-term financial results rather than producing good quality products at a fair price, improving manufacturing processes or developing new products and technologies. Instead they moved their factories overseas.

Just another reason to fight the TPP.

'We live under the flag, but we won't scab under the flag!'

And, hopefully, it will be an American-made American flag.

If you're thinking of replacing your ragged old flag for the July 4th holiday, here's a list of U.S.-based manufacturers that make American flags, courtesy of the Flag Manufacturers Association of America:
Annin Flagmakers
C.F. Flag
J.C. Schultz Enterprises, Inc. / FlagSource
Valley Forge Flag
Glaser Mills, Inc.
Their websites either have online catalogs or store locators where you can find the nearest flag store.

According to manufacture this,
The Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) often hears from people frustrated by an inability to find “Star Spangled Banners” made in the U.S...
The Flag Manufacturers Association of America (FMAA) works to make it easy for consumers to know they’re purchasing an American-made flag. The Association certifies flags that are “made in the U.S. of materials that are domestic in origin and that all processes in every step of its manufacture were completed in U.S. facilities with U.S. labor.”
The Flag Manufacturers website also offers an FAQ about the proper way to display and handle the flag. It gives very specific guidelines on displaying a flag In a public gathering, from a staff on the speaker's platform or on the floor. The FAQ also explains why some American flag kits include Chinese-made poles.

And in honor of both the unions that protect freedom and the flag that represents it, we bring you this rallying cry by striking flag-makers during the IWW millworkers' strike in Paterson, N.J., in 1913. The mill owners tried to lure the workers back by hanging American flags on the mill and signs appealing for them to return. The IWW had lapel cards made that said:
We wove the flag; we dyed the flag; we live under the flag; but we won't scab under the flag!
Happy 4th!

Corporations trying to weaken "Made in America" requirements

In America.

Big corporations are lobbying to make it easier to stamp "Made in America" on products that aren't.

Owen Herrnstadt at the Economic Policy Institute warns that businesses are urging the Export-Import Bank to weaken its domestic content requirements. That means companies are required to buy a certain percentage of material for their products domestically to get access to local markets or preferential treatment under trade laws.

Two-thirds of Americans say buying American goods is essential to keep good jobs. And three-fourths say a product must be manufactured within the U.S. borders if it's to be considered "American."

Herrnstadt writes,
Given this consensus, it is ironic that on the same day that one federal agency extolled the virtues of U.S. goods stamped with Made in America, another federal agency issued a notice that it was conducting a review of its domestic content policies, and suggestions made by some businesses to reduce domestic content requirements—giving them greater incentives to Make it Elsewhere. It is even more ironic that the agency being asked to adopt these suggestions on weakening domestic content requirements is the United States Export-Import Bank, whose primary purpose is to support U.S. exports that create and maintain jobs here at home.
The Export-Import Bank’s mission, established by federal law, is clear: “The Bank’s objective in authorizing loans, guarantees, insurance, and credits shall be to contribute to maintaining or increasing employment of United States workers.” [12 U.S.C. Section 635(a)(1)]
The Bank fulfills its mission by providing U.S. exporters with more favorable financing than they could obtain privately, on the condition that they meet certain public policy requirements. One of these policies requires exporters to manufacture their product in the United States. The Bank’s policy is simple, effective, and based on common sense: If a company wants government support for its exports, it has to produce its goods and services in the United States. Taxpayers shouldn’t finance the use of foreign goods and services.
Congress ordered the bank to review its domestic content policies. You know what happens next.
Some exporters want even more government support for the foreign goods and services in their products. Among other things, they suggest that Ex-Im promote a fiction that foreign content is domestic content. Many of their suggestions would give U.S. companies more incentive to ship U.S. jobs and technology to other countries and raise serious questions.
That's not the direction the vast majority of Americans want to take.

Read the whole thing here.

Two men are traveling cross-country in a fire truck to rally support for American-made products.

The video above is a Charlottesville, Va., newscast about the two, Aaron Lorell and Alex Smith. They explain how the loss of American manufacturing harms University of Virginia students. Without US manufacturing, they lose out on jobs as accountants, designers, marketing managers or even CEOs of manufacturers.

We like their idea of a "Made in America" section in retail outlets.  Lorell wrote to Wal-Mart's CEO  suggesting "Patriot Zones" in retail stores.

America jobs: A superior brand

Here’s someone with an idea to promote businesses that continue to manufacture their products in the U.S. An article by Peter Goodman in the Huffington Post on Monday introduces Christian Mouritzen, founder of the American Brand Project.

By shining the spotlight on companies that make their goods in America, Mouritzen hopes to put an end to the defeatist idea that nothing is made in the U.S. anymore – that we are all hapless victims of globalization.

Peterson writes:
The American Brand Project aims to put the spotlight on such companies while serving as an e-commerce marketplace for their wares, taking a cut of the resulting transactions. On its website -- now up in beta version and set for a full launch in the fall -- the project lays out the stories of the companies whose products it sells, and extends a special offer for each. It rates companies on their quotient of American-ness, awarding points for whether they are headquartered in the United States, how much of their revenue remains here, how many of their raw materials are sourced domestically, and the degree to which they rely on American labor.
Mouritzen and four friends came up with the idea during a conversation about U.S. unemployment. They decided to use their digital marketing skills to boost companies that produce in the U.S. and employ American workers. Even Mouritzen had his doubts in the beginning, according to the article:
"We had the perception, like many others, that quality products really were not manufactured in the U.S. anymore," Mouritzen told me. "Luckily, we were proven severely wrong. As we started looking around, we found lots of great companies producing great products, but many of them were not telling their stories very well."
One such company is Hanky Panky, which produces intimate apparel and relies exclusively on American contractors to manufacture its products. While doing business in an industry that has otherwise moved most of its operations overseas, Hanky Panky is keeping its services as intimate as its products. Rather than following cost-cutting models by moving production abroad, the company is able to build closer relationships with its customers and its capacity to quickly tailor orders to their needs.

As Peterson reports, the American Brand Project is not merely about making an abstract argument about sustained U.S. manufacturing and jobs. Instead, Mouritzen’s new business proves the point through a practical e-commerce venture, championing American entrepreneurship and labor.

Now that’s what we call brand loyalty.

Challenge: Buy only 'Made in America' for a week

Buying only American-made products for a week? Easier said than done! When Joey Fortman, a mother from Philadelphia, was challenged to purchase only domestically-produced goods, she did not expect just how difficult it would be. Not only are most essential everyday products imported, but most goods have at least some imported parts. Fortman takes pride in buying products created by fellow Americans, knowing that she is helping to keep jobs in America. However, she was shocked to discover how much more time and effort this task requires.

If you're planning on hosting a cookout or barbeque in honor of America’s independence this week, be sure to celebrate with supplies made within the country.

Since  this task can be difficult, we have created a list of products created by Teamsters:

When I shop, I always look for Made in USA and Union label. My Wifes car is a Saturn, my Son Drives a Chevy Cruz, We understand that we can help create jobs for Americans, if we simply put our Country first and Buy America.
Applause to ssirishrmblr who says: “Almost any time I buy any product it starts with (Where's it made?).”
And cheers to David Mackey Sr., for noting his preference for
Anything made in America by Union People is what I like. UNION YES! WHEN AND WHERE? NOW!

Although making it clear he’s not a fan of Miller Lite, Frank Bialek helpfully expands the list of American made:
In no particular order I enjoy American bred steak, pork and lamb, Budweiser, Leinekukel, Point especially POIINT DARK, Chicago dogs, the U.S. Mail, Detroit automakers, MLB, NFL, the Chicago Transit Authority, Public Libraries, All music but not so much opera, Municipal skylines especially Chicago and NYC. I am not a union member but also have no problem with them.

Joseph Bocek also helps broaden our understanding of made in America.
ANY Manufacturing plant built here in the U.S. to provide jobs for our citizens and bring jobs back from plants that were moved because of trade agreements.
Some noted the difficulty of finding products made in this country, but as tm4093 points out:
I am as guilty as everyone else, in buying the dirt cheapest item available and causing this current recession. By buying "Dirt Cheap," I have made my life - and the lives of my neighbors - "Dirt Cheap." Please think like this when making any purchases. We cannot create jobs - if we don't buy our own products.

Further, aufrichtig40 says while it is not easy to find U.S. brands,
I don't give up. I think of my blue-collar parents, whose lifetime of labor contributed mightily to postwar America's prosperity, and I refuse to shame them by neglecting to seek out domestically-made products ... especially if they carry a union label.
The most expansive view of union made/America made brings us full circle to the real Made in America bottom line: The people who make our goods and provide our services.
From Birgit Nicolaisen:
My favorite made in America item....that would be my daughter! With Mom and Dad both proud union members!
As Lawrence Sandoval summed it up: "Union made families!"
Stay tuned for the Teamsters' list of favorites!

Starbucks buys mugs made in US

Here's some good news from The Street:
In an era of disappearing manufacturing jobs and struggling small towns, a giant corporation has become an unlikely hero in Ohio. East Liverpool, by the Ohio River, has been called country's "Pottery Capital," but lately just a few factories remain.
Among them is American Mug and Stein, which recently finished up its heftiest order ever: Starbucks(SBUX_) requested 20,000 mugs. The project allowed owner Clyde McClellan to double his staff--and continuing Starbucks orders have let him keep them employed, NPR reports.
Hausenware, Starbucks' mug and tumbler supplier, normally looks to overseas factories. This time, however, the company opted to stay domestic -- even though it takes far longer for McClellan's firm to make the mugs on old equipment.
"When these small towns and these small factories are supported by a large customer that believes in it, we can make it happen, we can bring it back," says Hausenware's owner.
"There are hundreds of East Liverpools around the country today," notes Starbucks boss Howard Schultz. "Even though it's more expensive to manufacture this mug in the US ... this is what we need to do."
The story of East Liverpool is sadly familiar:
James Bennett, an English potter, established the pottery industry in East Liverpool, and it became the community's leading employer. East Liverpool became known as "The Crockery City." East Liverpool once produced more than half of the United States's annual ceramics output. Throughout East Liverpool's ceramics history there were more than 300 potteries. Of these, three remain: The Hall China Company, the Homer Laughlin China Company (located across the Ohio River in Newell, West Virginia) and Pioneer Pottery.
Among the most famous of East Liverpool's ceramics was the porcelain known as Lotus Ware. Produced by Knowles, Taylor & Knowles in the 1890s, this Moorish- and Persian-influenced artware swept the competition at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. It is generally considered to be the finest porcelain ever produced in the US. The Museum of Ceramics in downtown East Liverpool has the country's largest public display of Lotus Ware.
Since the mid-1960s or so, East Liverpool's pottery industry has steadily declined. This has been because pottery workers in less-developed countries—among them China, South Korea and Taiwan--are paid a small fraction of the wage of American workers.

Badass clothing made in Detroit

More good news on the American-made clothing front: There's a company making clothing in Detroit. In fact, the company is called Made in Detroit.

As you can see from the photo, it's clothing that a lot of Teamsters would wear.

Kid Rock rescued the company from bankruptcy protection and sells a line of clothing through Made in Detroit. Check it out here.

Here's what the company says about itself:
It was hatched in 1991 as a spark for a city that'd long been left for dead. It was born of a nod to the backbone that made this place unlike any other. It was built with a forearm, a hammer and a shop hat on a silhouette that stood ready to strike. It wasn't just a logo. It was a piece that paid a bit of respect to any industry that made America great and a direct link back to the city that fueled it. It's not a logo that was made in a minute. It's not a mark that was made overseas. It's not a brand that was made in jest.
It's Made In Detroit and for 20 years it has been the singular symbol for a city that's not about to quit. And like a city that's spent the good part of half a century with its back against the wall, in 2005 Made In Detroit found itself pinned against some tough times of its own. Bought out of bankruptcy before another Detroit legend could head to dust, Made In Detroit's been refueled by Kid Rock and flown as a flag in t-shirt form on stages all over the world. It's no wonder that an artist who stands for Detroit wouldn't stand by when another bit of his city was taken down.
Today, Made In Detroit is more than a Kid Rock brand, it's the official mark of a movement that belongs to all of us. Born to represent, this is MADE IN DETROIT.

Buy 'Made in America' for Memorial Day

Made in America.
Haven't done all your Memorial Day shopping? Here are some suggestions from AmericanManufacturing.org to keep it Made in America.

Crossposting from Friday's blog:

This coming Monday is Memorial Day, an important day of recognition for the brave men and women who lost their lives while serving this country, and the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) salutes all members of the armed services. Since this day of observance unofficially marks the beginning of the summer holiday and is often accompanied by family barbeques and other outdoor activities, we wanted to share some  American-made products that will help you kick start the summer while keeping it made in made in America.
Duluth Pack: Traveling this Memorial Day? Pack up and hit the road with sturdy and stylish luggage from Duluth Pack. With a history that dates back to 1882, this Duluth, Minnesota-based company offers a wide range of American-made bags to meet all your travel needs—and with lifetime guarantees, you’ll be using them for many Memorial Days to come.
Coleman Coolers: We've previously blogged about how Coleman Co. moved production of its 16-quart, wheeled plastic coolers from China to Kansas, which is great news. This Memorial Day we recommend opting for one of these American-made coolers to keep your beverages cool in the hot summer sun.
Weber Grills: No memorial day is complete without some time spent flipping hotdogs and hamburgers on the grill--and no grill is more famous than the classic Weber charcoal grill.  These iconic American-made grills were originally designed by a welder from Illinois who was looking for a way to keep ash from blowing onto his food. More than 50 years later, Weber grills remain a favorite amongst American barbeque lovers.
Beach Pail Set: Heading to the beach this Memorial day? Don’t forget to pack some American-made beach toys for the kids! With a pail, shovels, castle molds, and a sieve this beach pail set from AmeriKid.com will guarantee hours of fun—just add sand!
And if you're planning on having a beer, be sure it's an American, union-made beer!
