Amy Resh Shriver took this picture of her dad, Ralph Resh, Jr., proud member of Local 453. |
It's "Post Your Union Card on Facebook" day, and the call was answered by Teamsters, steelworkers, SEIU members, carpenters and other proud union members. So many posted photos of their cards (their Social Secruity numbers carefully blocked out) with expressions of pride. Typical was this comment from Keith Beeson Pope:
Shared mine and damn proud to be a Teamster!
John Batzig wrote that he's been a Teamster since his dad got him when he was 17 years old:
Still working today at the age of 46.Diane Ersbo cleverly added this to her card:
Some had cards that were old and tattered. Some were brand new, like Charles Fleming's new BLET card (they were just mailed out). And we saw plenty of retiree cards. Who said retirees can't learn Facebook? (We never did, actually -- some of the best Teamster Facebookers are retirees!).
Others complained they never got cards. Michael Rollins had a reply for them:
Got mine up.I didnt get mine when we organized, but it only took a phone call and 3 days later I had one. It came in the mail yesterday. 4 days after seeing this pic. The only reason I didnt have a union card was because I didnt get off my ass to get it. When was the last time any of you non-card carrying members went to the union hall? I am sure your BA wouldnt be too bothered to hook you up with a card.So did Steve Oswald:

Instead of bitching about YOUR UNION, take part in YOUR UNION...talk to YOUR STEWARD...go to YOUR UNION MEETINGS, go to YOUR UNION HALL and see whats going on...if you don't like what you see VOTE THEM OUT...you can't expect to have a GOOD UNION and a GOOD UNION JOB if YOU don't PARTICIPATE! It's YOUR UNION...PROTECT IT, DON'T BITCH ABOUT IT!Lori Slaven was assured it was fine to post a photo of herself after she wrote:
i dont have an actual union card to post today even though im a proud member of local 676 in Jersey.
Will this picture of me with our president Howard Wells, and UPS driver turned Teamster Business Agent Tommy Lion be proof enough of my status??
Nice photo, Lori! |
Fred W. Roth posted three union cards -- his own, his son's and his brothers:
Joined this mans' Union in 1967, retired in 2003. My son & brother are teamsters. I may, at times have had political differences with them but I am a loyal member who has told all who would listen, choose Teamster. As Jimmy Hoffa Sr said "If it breaths organize it."Our favorite comment, though, came from Bill Diehl, who responded to someone called "Danny" who insulted unions:
Hey Danny Boy, you're burning the burgers and ruining the fries - stop posting on FB and get back to the McDonalds kitchen! We'll keep an eye out for more great posts!
P.S. - YOU NEVER HAD A UNION CARD ANYWAY.
- Local 399 and PROUD of it!
