Welcome to the 33 new Teamsters who just voted to join Teamsters Local 745!
Our new brothers and sisters are Hertz vehicle service agents at the Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport. They voted to join us because they want job security and decent treatment.
The vote, on Dec. 30, was 27-6 to become Teamsters.
Brent Taylor, secretary-treasurer of Local 745, said 55 other workers voted to join
the local in September 2008.
"We're working hard to grow our unit at Hertz at the airport," Taylor said.
In the earlier campaign, the instant return, customer-service representatives, Gold Club runners and door greeters voted 45-8 to join the Teamsters. There are now nearly 90 organized workers at Hertz at the airport.
There are a lot of good reasons to join a union. Study after study shows that union workers have better pay, better benefits and are more likely to have pensions. But organizers will tell you the main reason workers join unions is that they feel management is unfair. Organizers are used to hearing about managers promoting their friends or firing people for no reason or harshly disciplining workers for minor mistakes.
Rod Cuevas, organizer for Local 745, no doubt heard those same stories. “The latest group of Hertz workers is concerned about job security and respect,” he said.
